The obvious answer is; I will have arrived when I have completed this program. I don’t however see that as the correct answer, at least for me. I feel it would be more accurate to say I will have arrived when I am ready to move onto the next challenge, having developed my skill set past what I have learnt from this program. I feel that continually evolving and developing is the best way to improve my practice.
How I will know I am ready to move beyond what I am learning now will be determined by my future students. To date I have spend a tremendous number of hours developing my self professionally by working with peers, participating in professional development courses and reading countless resources on teaching. Each one of these components has allowed me to grow and develop my teaching practice. I see my personal developments reflected in my students. Not just academic results, but how they participate in their learning, how they trust the environment I provide and how they learn through being a member of the community that we collectively create. I want to take my teaching online, at least in part, and mastering that will indicate to me it is time to move to the next challenge.
Yes, completing the course is an important factor in my knowing I am progressing in my evolution as a teacher, but I feel that once I have successfully incorporated what I have learnt into my teaching I will be ready to take the step in my professional development; then I will have arrived.
