Education has always played a large part in my adult life. I originally began in the field of finance and investment and through professional development courses I trained in portfolio performance and management, ending this stage of my life as a senior hedge fund accountant for a large UK based hedge fund.
It was never a straight path however. Whilst traveling through Africa in 1999; I came to the decision that I wanted to become a teacher. I was going to return to New Zealand to complete this, but had just met my future wife in North Africa. She was returning to London, England an so once again I found myself in London working in finance.
As visa’s expired and decisions had to be made, my wife and I traveled for a while before settling in Abbotsford to begin our life in Canada. I applied to and was accepted in the University of the Fraser Valley, where I completed a number of courses to broaden my academic base for my future application to a teacher college.
Prior to entering this program, the teacher education program was the last university program I had taken, and the first in many years. It wasn’t, however, the end of my education. Teaching children and youths has probably ensured that my learning was going to continue for many more years, my own children adding to the experiences that I have had.
I find it truly amazing to see how children engage in activities and student are now different. They share experiences and enrich activities simply through their enthusiasm. That is why I am currently enrolled in this course; this course provides me the opportunity to expand my understanding of how education can be delivered in what is, without doubt, a growing discipline within education. Online education as it continues to develop offers so many opportunities, and I want to be a part of that. To do this I must look at continuing my development by participating in programs such as the OLTD program.
