I would like to progressively integrate more online content into my teaching. I see that it can provide huge potential for students to be challenged and engaged. It also provides the opportunity for me to embed more self-direction for students, enabling them to determine the path they want to take and make the connections with the concepts that they see on their way to achieving a common learning goal.
The online environment also has the potential to provide me another avenue for assessment, both formative and summative. Summatively it provides me with the opportunity to ‘check in’ and determine progress or provide guidance. It also can act as the face-to-face interaction that currently enables me to alter what I am doing in the classroom as a lesson or unit progresses. In short, I see the online environment as an opportunity to help me develop bespoke courses that are tailored to the needs of my students.
To do this I know that I will need to develop strategies that ensure students are engaged along with strategies to determine their engagement. I need to learn how to develop course goals that suite the online environment whilst still achieving the overall desired learning outcomes. I have to better understand how learning can be presented in a multitude of ways using technology and be comfortable with the creation of knowledge from uncontrolled and innumerable number of sources, and be confident the end product it represent the students learning.
And who knows what the future holds, perhaps that will promote me to branch out and teach a course completely online.
